Lava in darkness
I had a bit of trouble falling asleep last night. It struck me that if I limited the range of light sources to just a few meters, I could quite possibly have dynamic lighting in the game.
Lighting would be tile-based, like in the good old days, so don’t expect any fancy bumpmapping or shading here. Flat shaded boxes, that’s where it’s at! This speed lets me possibly do things like define certain materials as light emissive. A dark cave, lit up by red hot liquid magma would look very good indeed.
There are, of course, caveats, like not scaling well, so I’ll have to limit the dynamic light range to perhaps just the nearest 64^3 or 128^3 blocks.
