Film Festival Reviews. Part 1.
Precious
A young obese black girl has serious problems at home, but starts to learn how to read and write.
I found the
characters a bit too extreme, almost like they were caricatures of stereotypes (the evil mother was REALLY evil, the
good teacher was REALLY good, the fat girl was REALLY fat), and it got in the way of me enjoying the movie fully.
The acting was great, especially Mo'Nique’s extremely aggressive and damaged mother. Mariah Carey was surprisingly
good as the social worker, if a bit too toned down. I enjoyed the gag about Precious wanting to know her ethnicity.
Best part: Great monologues.
Worst part: One-dimensional characters.
Score: 3/5
